The website for the City of Moore, Okla., Recommended “that each resides storm safe room or underground cellar. “It says below-ground accommodation is the best protection against tornadoes. But no local ordinance or building code requires that these shelters, whether in homes, schools and businesses, and only about 10 percent of households have Moore. The rest of Oklahoma, one of the countries in the typhoon belt is not called Tornado Alley, ask them – despite the annual attack of the deadly and devastating twisters like the one on Monday, as .

It is a familiar story, as well, in places like Joplin, Mo.The entire Great Plains and the Deep South, where tornadoes are a seasonal threat, but a government regulation rankles. In 2011, a monster tornado destroyed much of Joplin, killing 160 people in a situation that no storm shelter requirements. City considered seeking shelter in homes rebuilt or new, but decided that doing so would be “cost prohibitive” because soil conditions make expensive building basements, said Assistant City Manager Sam Anselm. Even so, it is estimated that half of the homes had been rebuilt including bunkers. The schools are being rebuilt in room safe, said.

In Moore, the website explains that the city has not a community shelter, because the 15-minute warning is not enough time for security and because “in general, people are faced with less risk taking refuge in a reasonably well-built residence.”This is true in general, but not for a storm tornado MileWide as of Monday, it was a terrible memory of a tornado that caused heavy damage on May 3, 1999. Curtis said McCarty, a member of the Committee on Uniform Building Code Oklahoma and the builder himself, the typhoon on Monday, has defeated attempts to resist it above the Earth’s surface. “You can not build a structure that is going to take a direct hit from a hurricane as it will stand,” he said. Website of sound tones, which, in retrospect, it may seem incredibly upbeat. It said that in 1999 the experience – “Very unique event Weather Guide” – which means that the standard “shelter in place” adequate protection methods. If another storm comes, “only percent chance of less than 1 is to be as strong and violent as what we had” before.

Larry Graves, a project manager with Downey Consulting, an engineering company in Oklahoma City, working with schools, said buildings had been updated with safe rooms so fragmented in recent years. “You can see more of it, but it’s a great item funding,” he said, noting that the school district can build a large common room with concrete or creating a particularly strong school, home. Without additional protection, Mr.Graves said the drill is about the same as it was when I was a student 40 years: “They move into the corridor, and there is cooped up and wait it out. ”Construction standards are widely studied in Moore. In 2002, a study published in the journal of the American Meteorological Society, Timothy P.

Marshal, an engineer in Dallas, he suggested that “the quality of the new housing was generally no better than a home built before the tornado” in 1999. Confirmed many houses built in the town after the storm to their foundations with bolted plates, which greatly increased resistance to storms; instead, sponsored most of the same types of nails and pins that failed in 1999. Only 6 of the 40 new houses had closet-sized room safety. Moore Mayor Glenn Lewis said that since then, the city has strengthened building codes, including a requirement that new homes include braces storm. The city also aggressively promoted the construction of safe room and other measures, more than $ 12 million in state and federal emergency management funds to subsidize the construction of safe rooms offer a $ 2,000 rebate, is said Albert Ashwood, director of the Oklahoma Department of. Still, he said, it has been a few years ago that Moore has received new funding for the program.

MrFowle, 75, is the founding director of FXFOWLE Architects. The company, which began in New York on Fox & Fowl Architects in 1978, he designed a number of projects around the city, including three and four Times Square and The New York Times Building. MrFowle has been working on the expansion and renovation of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Interview conducted and condensed. VIVIAN MARINO.

QWeek turns 76. Every thought of retiring?. AWell, I’m definitely trying to slow down. I want to get into semiretirement. I do not intend to give up. I used to put in probably 60 hours per week, and now I’m down to between 40 and 50, so it will be something reasonable.

QWhat is your main role in the company these days?. AAs the founder, I have over the years set the tone, character, culture contact. And at this point, with many partners, who are extremely talented and knowledgeable in their own right, is my most important role in ensuring that the culture kept in line and not in any way that I can, especially in the sustainable side. I’m still in the development and management of projects, but I am no longer running and the fixed setting of goals. We have seven partners, with each doing their part in moving the company forward.Q

How is business?. AIt’s good. It is slow to alert, but it’s definitely improved. We took a lot of employees again. QHow many projects are FXFowle working on now?. AI also will not be able to measure it.

They are all shapes and sizes – interior renovation of commercial buildings to 66 floors and cultural institutions. Well, big projects, there are probably 20 major projects. QOne of the company’s most important projects is Alchemy Properties’ new condominium, 35XV West 15th Street. AIt’s coming along well. I am not responsible partner in that way not because I know the ins and outs.

QBut you are close to the Javits Convention Center Renovation. What is happening there?. AMy main project now is the rehabilitation of the Javits Center, which has been going on for more than six years. We are almost complete with the first phase of the project, which concludes that the funding was available. Green roof is almost seven acres we have under way.

It will be the most durable plant material, which is basically Sedum. Now that the zoning is changed around the Javits Center, there will be a lot of very tall buildings. Javits Center is the culmination of a fifth facade. We want to make sure that it’s aesthetically pleasing and environmentally responsible. So we replaced the entire front.

It’s a nice, much more transparent attachable building, as you could see in him. It is lighter, and the inside now freshened, lit up. It ‘still in progress. This will be LEED silver rating equivalent. QWill seek LEED certification?. ASoWe are debating on whether to go for it now, or when you are finished.

QWhat else is provided at the center?. AMechanical equipment is replaced. Ultimately, we will be able to except it, and put it to the size and scale, it really wants to be. At this time is poor by national standards. So it only shows some of the types of trading against the community, which attracts Shows. This first phase should be completed by the end of.

When funding is available, the second phase will include the upgrading of the paved area in front of the building site.More electronic infrastructure of the building will be brought up to current industry standards, and, of course, would be very nice to have, as part of the next phase. QSustainability has always been very important to you. AClimate change is the most serious issue facing architects today. Buildings account for 37 percent of all greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and in New York City, it is 75 percent. We know that we can make the building a minimum of 50 to 60 percent more efficient than they are today – and it is in all types of lighting, the efficiency of mechanical equipment for the renewable energy wherever possible.

It is not the easiest thing, and intensive environments such as New York, but we must continue to push this. There are many trends that are working against us, such as the use of more and more glass. QHow much is the company’s work in the New York area?. AIt is about 50 percent. About a third of our work is overseas: China, India, Turkey, Saudi Arabia. QAny other projects you can talk about?.

AWe have an apartment building on the west side next to the Hudson Yards project – 3 Hudson Boulevard, a 66-story office building. It is the building Moinian. Will go into a series of phases, because it was connected to the No.7 subway. We have done a lot of work initially to get the work platform in place so that no. 7 can be coordinated with those. We are also making a number of residential projects.

QLeasing is painfully slow at 11 Times Square. How does it make you feel like an architect building?. AIt’s a tough time, and this is probably also a combination of location – Eighth Avenue be. This is definitely a great building. Green, a building, and there is no real reason is logical, and it is not filled.

Anytime a building we design economic struggle that is not fun. We do not like to see anyone get hurt, and I think ultimately it will be fine, but will definitely be slow. QHave you always been interested in architecture?. ASince I was in high school. I do Building Sand Castles.

To go by the statements of most economists the main one would be forgiven for believing that this is the best time to Keynesian economics. Fans of John Maynard Keynes, the famous 20th century economist who developed the theory of how nations could dig out of the economic downturn have been running victory laps after the collapse last month of the decision by Harvard economists Carmen M. Reinhart and Kenneth Ş. Rogoff economies that tend to slow significantly after government debt reaches 90 percent of gross domestic product. So, as suggested in the Brussels crusher numbers announced last week that the economy of the countries of the euro area – who have been following a path decidedly not Keynesian – shrank again in the beginning of the year.

It was the sixth quarterly contraction in the region in a row. The confluence of events provided further evidence of central proposition of Keynes when consumers and businesses are reducing their debt burden and private spending and stall investment, it is the responsibility of the government of . Her complaints. Reinhart and J.Rogoff indebted governments to reduce their budget deficits and the debt burden should move quickly to the House Republicans, and the Germans demanded that the British Tories, has provided intellectual.

Its demise at the hands of a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts, AMHERST, which identified deficiencies and Harvard economists’ methods – left in its wake a more modest statement: heavily indebted nations are slower. It is not yet clear that the debt must be depressed growth. Experience from Europe and elsewhere suggests that austerity programs, which often hold back the growth of the debt burden worse. Two economists – Lawrence H. Summers of Harvard, former adviser to President Obama’s chief economic, and Brad DeLong of the University of California, Berkeley – proposed in a recent paper that the rock-bottom interest rates that prevail today, government spending to encourage growth . In the United States, they concluded that it will ease people’s future debt burden – not increase it.

But in many ways is the worst time for Keynesian economists. Because despite all the intellectual firepower, governments around the world are tightening their belts industrial jealously. The Italian government has reduced the annual budget deficit to 3 percent of G. DP5 year. 5%, in 2009, the Irish government has been reduced to 7. 6 percent of 13. 9 percent. Has its own currency and the euro area, which is usually more than the neighborhood policy – British Prime Minister David Cameron’s government deficit declined by 6. G 3%.

DPlast year, compared with 11. 5 percent in 2009. “We will not be able to build a sustainable recovery with long-term growth,” Mr. Cameron said in a speech in March, “unless we solve the fundamental problem of excessive spending and debt that threaten our entire economy. ”The German government has a budget surplus. And, despite the belief of the public that Washington is engaged in spending, the deficit in the U.S.

fell 7 percent to G. DPin 2012 from 10. 1 percent in 2009. None of these countries are growing a lot, mind you. In the United States, the unemployment rate is still stuck at 7. 5 percent. In its latest economic forecast last month, the International Monetary Fund predicted that the national economy will grow only 1. 9 percent this year, a further reduction of budget cutting. Explain what the gap between victory and failure of policy theory?.

Resistance to the fiscal stimulus is just a matter of political tactics?. No other tempting possibilities of economic thought. One is that moral views are getting in the way of reason: the decisions of both elected officials and the electorate is driven by the economic research, but by a belief in the virtue of thrift over the ant and the grasshopper. Another is that the policy serves the moneyed interests of the creditors, lenders who are afraid of the heavily indebted governments will be tempted to default to allow higher inflation to erode the real value of the debt or tax the rich more heavily in the future. NGregory Mankiw of Harvard, a former chief economic advisor to President George W.

Bush, suggested another reason, rooted in the idea of democratic rule. “If the government’s goal is to express the collective will of the citizens, should not it follow the lead of those it represents by tightening its belt?” He wrote in the last. “If we as individuals feel poorer and reduce costs, why should our elected representatives in effect reverse these private decisions by increasing spending and going into debt on our behalf?”.

A new asthma drug developed by Sanofi and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals can help patients whose condition is not well controlled by existing drugs, according to the results of a small clinical trial released Tuesday. In the 12-week study, the number of asthma attacks or other outbreaks of symptoms by 87 percent in those getting the drug, dupilumab reduced, with which, in comparison to placebo. And also improved other measures of lung function and control of the disease, according to the results of the study, published online Tuesday in the New England Journal of Medicine and presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for Thoracic Society in Philadelphia. Dupilumab blocks interleukin-4 and interleukin-13, two inflammatory chemicals, whereby the body is considered to contribute to asthma. Sanofi and Regeneron said there are preliminary signs dupilumab working against the skin condition atopic dermatitis, suggesting it may block the biological pathway that contributes to more allergic conditions. However, a much larger study, take at least two or three years, is likely to be required before the drug can reach the market.

Comment asthma study, also published in The New England Journal of Medicine on Tuesday said it was “too early to say whether this therapy will be of clinical value,” though it probably is “on the right track. ”After two decades of frustration, Regeneron, based in Tarrytown, N. Y, Has become a major biotechnology company, thanks to booming sales of Eylea, to treat age-related macular degeneration of the drug, an eye disease. Regeneron shares nearly quintupled since the beginning of 2012. In trading Tuesday, but they closed one. 4%, at $ 259. 96There are an estimated 25 million Americans have asthma, and the disease is not well controlled in 10 to 20 percent of them by regular treatment, which consists of inhaled corticosteroids and beta-agonists glucocorticoid long-term.

Study involved 104 patients whose disease was not well controlled by current medications and who had elevated levels of the cell types of the immune system associated with problematic asthma. At first, patients continued to take their medications and existing simultaneously receive weekly injections of either placebo or dupilumab. But partway through the trial, they stopped taking their usual medication.During all 12 weeks, three patients taking dupilumab experienced worsening of asthma compared to 23 on placebo, a relative reduction of 87 percent. In the commentary, Dr.E

Michael.Wechsler National Jewish Health in Denver, said that in actual medical practice, patients would not be taken out of their existing medication. The real need, he wrote, is for medications to help control asthma when used in addition to existing drugs, and the study did not prove that dupilumab could play this role. In the first few weeks of the trial, when patients still taking their existing drugs there was no significant difference in the number of asthma among worsenings dupilumab and placebo, Dr.Wechsler writes. DrGeorge D.

Yancopoulos, Chief Scientific Officer of Regeneron, said the study was designed to have patients stop their medications to get a quick read on whether dupilumab worked. DrYancopoulos and other researchers from Regeneron and Sanofi were among the authors of the study. The lead investigator, Dr. Sally Wenzel of the University of Pittsburgh, has been a consultant for Regeneron.

This finding is usually a good brand of police work was a Bronx detective that offer online criminal enterprise, and soon to come – for an affordable price – changed into a private e-mail account. But detectives are not seeking to build a case against the suit, federal prosecutors said Tuesday. Instead, prosecutors said, was a customer. Based on information purchased from hackers, detective, Edwin Vargas, get credentials at least 43 e-mail accounts associated with 30 people, including at least 19 members of the NYPD in the Bronx, according to the complaint in the original packaging. The reason turned out to be a personal digital snooping, law enforcement officials said Detective Vargas, 42, who is suspected of a former girlfriend – also an employee of police department, the official said – started a new relationship with fellow officer. Vargas detective and the woman had a son together, officials said, but had broken.

“20-year Police Department veteran, never before suspected any inappropriate, to say nothing of criminal activity,” James Moschella, lawyer detectives union, said Detective Vargas, whom he represented at arraignment. Detective Vargas was released on $ 50,000 bond. “It is my understanding that some of the victims detectives are good,” said Michael J. Palladino, detective ‘union leader. “It would be inappropriate for me to comment further.

”Prosecutors said that over the course of two years, starting in 2010, Detective Vargas email hacking group contacted several times and paid about $ 4.050 for entering information in the reports of the officers and some private citizens. He paid between $ 50 and $ 250 bill, according to the complaint, using a credit card or PayPal account registered to his address Bronx. Low price for that, for the hackers, account information e-mail is not difficult to obtain. It was not clear what was done with the information obtained. Detective Vargas is accused of having access to only one account where he got the login details. Complaint failed to identify those targeted.

Prosecutors also accused the log entries on the phone belonging to one of the victims of a detective. Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted an investigation in conjunction with the Police Department Internal Affairs Bureau.Law enforcement officials said was one of a broader ongoing e-mail: Los Angeles-based start hacking through research that the researchers found the hacked accounts were owned by New York police. Detective Vargas, who joined the department in 1993, was indicted on charges of conspiracy to commit hacking and illegal access to a database of law enforcement. The second charge came from what prosecutors said was an unauthorized use of a national database of crime to obtain Detective Vargas, information about the two officers who had their e-mails. He did so, prosecutors said, of the Bronx, where he was working, despite the fact that the complaint did not identify any single.

Detective Vargas had worked in the 44th Police, where officials said some of the police officers targeted were based, but was currently assigned to the 40th Police. “Of all places, the Police Department is not the place of work where one should have to be concerned about an unscrupulous fellow employees,” said George Venizelos, head of F. BI”The New York Office.

It seems that I fly forever. Most of my business is to create new relationships for Elevation Burger and ensure that the franchise was going well. We have a restaurant in the Middle East, and when I travel where it can get crazy. I’ll try to hit as many countries as I can about nine days. I love to fly. I never thought twice about it.

I think I still love you, more or less, but young families, all I do is travel time that I can spend with his wife and two children. What’s funny is that my children will become incredibly flyers. They fight over who gets the window seat. Air employees, I’m one of those people who have a soft spot. This is because I was one.

When I was in graduate school, I can pay for my education, one of the leading airline employee working in a call center. It was an ideal job because the hours were good and you had the added advantage of being able to travel. It was pretty cool because we could arrange our programs by trading with one another. A lot of times, we could take a month or so out of the house, and we do not have to pay for our flights. For someone with very little extra money, it’s an incredible opportunity. He also taught me patience.

I do not care what a call center working for you, airline or retail location, work with the public on the phone can be difficult. So I’m not one of those people who take my frustrations on the nearest airport employee, if my flight is canceled or delayed. It really is not their fault and, trust me, a lot of their work time spent listening to people yelling. Traveling to the Middle East was a bit of a culture shock for me. I remember sitting in a restaurant in Dubai that spilled out shopping area.

I thought I was in a mall as Tysons Corner, just outside Washington. All English-speaking. There are some English seated near me, and some grandparents with their grandchildren America. So, what I heard and what I saw just reminded me of the U.S., which was great for me because I do not speak anything but English and German.

There are a few things about aviation that give me pause. But when we went from St. Uzbekistan. Petersburg, I was a little worried. It was the strangest flight I’ve ever been on. Line to get on a plane is crazy and I was not sure what was happening.

I was sat in the smoking section, but as far as I know, the whole plane was the smoking section. There was a large German shepherd dog sitting next to me, whose only job seemed to be a passenger, rather than a bomb sniffing dog. I was in the vicinity of those guys who I think were seated from Uzbekistan and they were fascinated with me. Started talking and pointing at me and asked if I could see my passport. I nervous when I thought they were going to get from me, but all they wanted to do was to take a look. They have proven to be great and do not even bother so much carbon how my section of the plan was to obtain.

I thought it was cigarettes, but it was actually a guy who broke a camping stove and start cooking something over an open flame. No one seemed worried, and all I can say is judging by the smell, there is no one should ever complain about airline food.

“I have a really good travel karma,” Carol said Margolis. “Well, almost all the time. ”Things started going wrong for him at the start of a recent three-day whirlwind journey from a small city in the south of Norway, where he had a job in consulting, in a midsize city in Colorado, where . MsMargolis is one of those flexible business travelers who know the drill: Always have a plan B. And chill, just a few things to go wrong and you do not have to manage. But still, it was asking a lot of.

“Well,” she said, “between the bus ride five hours nighttime and then walking in the other hotel room in Oslo, then to sit in coach despite 36F in business-class ticket, then after . ”Whoa, it. As the peak summer travel season approaches, all has come to tackle a lesson. Rates and fees are rising and planes are impossible crowded. The trade group Airlines for America, says that U.S

. airlines will make about 209 million passengers from June to August – 27 million international flights, the highest number ever. The total number of flights and seats are down, however, as airlines pare routes. MsMargolis, a management consultant, said her recent trip reflected elements of a system that is stretched so tight that there is little slack to accommodate interruptions. “My baby just turned 29, so I know how many years I’ve been doing this because he was one year old, when I started traveling on business,” he said in a late-night call last week from Kristiansen, Norway,. “And this is the trip he.

”The saga is long, but we’ll get to the point. First, the small European airline had to fly her from Kristiansen in Copenhagen, the first leg outbound trip, a flight canceled due to strike. This meant I would miss the regular transatlantic flight from Copenhagen. Chicago to Colorado Springs contacted by Plan B, Newark, a plane, and instead had to go to Oslo. So quickly get to Oslo, at night, Christiansen (about 200 miles) was first hurdle. “I thought, I maintain, in spite of the heavy rain,” he said.”

This is a four-or five-hour drive, which was doable. But car rental was about $ 600 for a one-way drop-off and the taxi would take me for about $ 1000, so did the best feeling. Then, it was my hotel by taxi, desk agent said, ‘What about the bus? . “I like the bus?” . Margolis said in a press horror. But the bus turned out to be the most free and most trusted travel.

Tired, he got into a hotel in Oslo before midnight. “I used my key to open the door and turned on the lights, and the room was occupied,” said Ms.Smartwomentravelers Margolis, who publishes the Web site,. com and blogs about their adventures. “Luckily I did not hear any screaming. Back down to the office, I was upgraded to a better room without passengers – which I have to say is a tactic to score an upgrade that I had never thought of before.

”Flight from Newark to Oslo for business class breakfast was nice and quiet. But the connection to Chicago, Denver, rather than changing the. “Well, it’s a short hop from Denver to Colorado Springs, so I figured, no problem,” he said. Problem. She was a first class ticket on the itinerary but, with the change of flights and planes, no first-class seats.

“I’m the coach, the toilet in a row from the back, the way I see that seat 36F,” he said. “I was like, what the heck?”. Protests were fruitless. In anticipation of a later flight is not an option because of her tight schedule. Off she went to Denver, crammed into a window seat. “The guy next to me is sleeping, the guy in front of me has his seat all the way back, so I can not use my laptop.

I could barely move. I mean, the. K, Bladder, we have a long ride. However, even when I want to cry, do you think, what the hell, it’s nothing, suck it up. You get what you need and you’re on your way. ”The morning after the meeting in Colorado Springs airport, she went back to Norway the long term.

Oops, but she has a $ 4,000 ticket in her hand, she did not seem to have a discussion. No one at the airport or in the vast networks of interlocking alliances airline had no idea, I said. Option was to buy a completely new first-class ticket to Norway and left as travel agent more later. Value added tax: $ 6,000. All is well that ends well, she said – and her bag and good shoes turned out. But he added a note of empathy.

“If it can happen to those who really know what we’re doing – you know, get to the airport lounge and get help, always have a Plan B with different airlines – imagine the poor traveler who does not know the system. You will see more of them this summer.

When readers of “Americanah” meet the first Nigerian-born heroine, Ifemelu, has come a long way in life. She received a scholarship to Princeton. She is the absolute love of my life, “a man is dating a black American named Blaine, who teaches at Yale. She writes a blog about racial issues, which shows her “irreverent, bullying, funny and thought-provoking voice,” as one fan puts it online, but readers «Americanah” can find a lead. And it is an old flame Nigeria, Obinze who has never gotten over her.

But Ifemelu satisfied. And Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, immensely talented author of “Half of a yellow sun” uses everyday issues to highlight its grievances heroine. However, leading a career at Princeton, Ifemelu must travel to less-elite Trenton is braided her hair – and she cares so much hair that it is the focal point of this book is arguably the second-largest. The complex balance of rational and national identities is the first concern of all her. The interior Trenton, he tended to by women in Mali and Senegal whom he probably should feel a kinship Africa. But Ifemelu like Ms.A

dichie, bristles at the facile generalizations. And she knows so much about splitting her as she styled the. Although “Americanah” takes the form of a long love, star-crossed between Obinze Ifemelu and is most memorable for its refined, worldly scathing remarks about Nigerians and ways that create new identities of pretense and aspiration. “Half of the Yellow Sun” was just as finely tuned. But against the backdrop of the Biafran war played a Stark clarity that automatically gave gravitas. “Americanah” less authoritative because its rates are lower, but because the sharp Ifemelu opinions are not accompanied by a strong, aggressive person.

Passively wandering through the long, winding story. And “Americanah” dangerously close “exaggerated acting skills,” she Nigeria, or Nollywood, movies that ascribes to the “improbable layer” will. After you’ve determined what Ifemelu life in America has become, “Americanah” flashes back to the story of how she left her homeland. And Ms. Adichie’s largest writerly strength of the vision in his descriptions of the. She writes of a Lagos filled with climbers, debating the merits of American posturing against those English for their children, gravitating to those who hold enough power to dispense favors.

Ifemelu Aunty Uju is enjoying a cozy set up as a general pampered mistress while she is losing its protection and flee to America for his life. We hear fragments of Nigerian Students acquisition of American culture, arguing about the pronunciation (if the first syllable sounds like the plot erudite or shed?) And declaring their tastes in literature. Naturally, Ms.Adichie has a devastating eye for the kind of person who only cares about a book the quota of big words. And we see the economic consequences of brooking Authority: Ifemelu father of her female boss “Mummy,” no matter how absurd the demand to give up the sounds he called.

But, even if the fate of her parents to decline Ifemelu find the a seemingly ecstatic with the Obinze bonds. She calls him a “ceiling” because they love each other, she is transported to the ceiling before her view. But Ifemelu not created for pleasure. “Sometimes she worried that she was too happy,” the book says those early days lovestruck. “She would sink into moodiness and snap at Obinze, or at a distance.

And her joy would become restless thing flapping in it, as if seeking leave open. ”Such flutter not really popular Ifemelu anyone, even though she has a seemingly irresistible appeal for the African, American and African-American men. However, the education system in Nigeria and abroad to ask her frustration with her campus strikes, the new book is hefty infusion of cultural criticism. She fought hard to get his way, and the book effectively dramatizes her economic plight, at one point it was all but forced into prostitution. But even in its moments of suspected Ifemelu is smart about new attitudes she encounters.

“America tribalisms – race, ideology and region – was clear,” Ms. Adichie writes. “And he comforted her new skills. ”Blog bursts its terrible name and all. This is called “Raceteenth or various observations about American Blacks (Those formerly known as black) by Non-American black.

“And the blog, such as this book, is not afraid to take on taboo subjects, of misguided respect that some American blacks may apply to Mother Africa to the obsession with how women should be treated black hair. Ifemelu puts himself into all kinds of chemical suffering, watching the white girl come in the salon looking pigtails After Derek reveals that the hair and employment related, and even talks about the importance of the Obama family tailoring and hairdressing style. More dramatically, “Americanah” takes Obinze to London, where it is the lowest menial job, tries to enter an arranged marriage with an Englishwoman and watches Nigerian friends show off in ridiculously high level British forms. One of the most oddly barbed moments in the book include “voodoo of fine dining”, which suffers from a friend’s largesse Obinze. (Obinze-Burger coming to the martini glass, the sound of his host’s crowing. ) But Obinze life abroad into disastrous, and he must return to Nigeria to find a way.

The first half of “Americanah” (the title refers to the new Americanized Ifemelu) is tough-minded and clear. But Ms.Adichie disappointingly allows its history down to the level of mere romance, leaving her readers to wonder not so much whether Ifemelu and Obinze will be reunited. The plot ultimately feels like an excuse for the ventilation of opinions – and opinions carry much more conviction than the narrative makes. MsAdichie shows a lot of great critical intelligence, not knowing how to can betray our truest self. But if she has any real passion for people to “Americanah”, she made a very good job of keeping themselves.

Beirut, Lebanon – Syrian government forces backed by fighters from the Lebanese Hezbollah militant group pushing Sunday as part of a strategic Qusayr by prolonged anti-government rebels and government forces, according to the news channel. If progress stops, it would be a serious setback for the opponents of President Bashar al-Assad. Both sides called it one of the most intense ground battles of the war. The fight seemed likely to inflame regional tensions as Hezbollah is pushed deeper into the conflict in Syria, the growing fear of regional conflagration. Syrian military Qusayr hammered, on the border with Lebanon, along with airstrikes and artillery, killing at least 52 people and injured hundreds of civilians, can not be cowered like to escape the city, activists say. At the end of the day about 60 percent of the city, including the municipal office building, is under the control of the army for the first time in several months, said an activist.

Residents said insurgents kept fighting the night Qusayr, killing several Hezbollah fighters and government. Syrian state television said the army was “tightened noose on the terrorists,” the government of the time for their armed opponents by attacking from several directions. State media said the army “restored security and stability” to the majority of the city, killing many of the rebel fighters and capturing others. The battle for the city, in the province of Homs heavily disputed, viewed as loyalists and opponents of the government as a turning point that would, in the words of an activist in Kusair “to decide the fate of the regime and the revolution. ””This is one of the hardest days throughout Syria,” said the activist, Tarek, who will only give his first name because he was concerned for his safety. “If Qusayr is finished, it will be the end of the revolution in Homs.

”MrAssad, according to people who spoke with him, he believes reaffirms its handle in Homs province is vital to maintaining control of a number of population centers in western Syria, and finally in military campaigns to retake rebel held territory . Many analysts say this is not possible, the Government will be able to recover the control of these areas, however, it can consolidate its grip in the west, leading to a de facto secession. The battle brought the role of Hezbollah in Syria forward as war becomes a regional conflict, putting Shiite Iran, the main ally of Mr.Sunni Muslim states and their Western allies to support any uprising against Assad and Hezbollah,. At the heart of Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, residents are galvanized by a new feeling that they were at war, according to Ali, a local resident who is associated with a Hezbollah fighter sent Qusayr. I said that 14 Hezbollah fighters who died on Sunday, a figure that is consistent with the claims of the rebels and those websites of Hezbollah official.

If it is confirmed, the toll would make the battle action by far the most expensive of the group since it entered in Syrian conflict. “It reminds me of the war in July 2006,” Ali on Sunday night, Hezbollah’s war with Israel, he said, referring to the last major battle. “All the people are still up. They are looking forward to what they pray for the victory of our men. ”Tensions have risen in Lebanon as Syrian rebels shelled the area controlled by Hezbollah. On Sunday, they press the Lebanese town of Hermel with Grad rockets, activists said.

Ali, said a relative told him in a text message from Quşayr: «Things are just fine. They are perfect. ”He said he supported Hezbollah intervention in Syria because it will counteract the increasing group of Sunni extremist like Al Nusra Front among the rebels. “If we do not protect our villages,” he said, referring to the Shiite villages in Syria, “Al Nusra will be out of our house the next day. ”Residents of the Bekaa valley in Lebanon, which border Syria have reported recent increases in the funeral of Hezbollah fighters out there.

A resident described Lebanese Shiites in the region is concerned about their relatives in the ranks. “They are soldiers – they have to go,” said resident. While many Lebanese Shiites supported Mr.Assad, there is a quiet horror at the fact that Hezbollah fighters killed in battles with other Arab-Muslims in the country where they have a lot of connections, rather than fighting with the main enemy of Israel. Perhaps looking to meet such concerns, Hezbollah, which depends on mr. Assad, his arms shipment from Iran, recently recognized its military role in Syria openly.

The group’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, said the group would Qusayr, and the Syrian government to fall into a rebellion that is seen as being instigated by Israel and the West.

Islamabad, Pakistan – upscale neighborhood of Karachi on Sunday in a lower number of active voter is a repeat parliamentary elections, the main political party after a major officer, was gunned down in a day, officials say. The district is focusing on allegations of electoral fraud during the vote on May 11 national and voting there was suspended earlier today after reports of violent intimidation. In particular, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf – the party led by the former cricket star Imran Khan, who inroads made among affluent Karachi voters – blame the dominant party in the city, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, of trying his supporters . Then, late Saturday, a co-founder of Mr.Khan’s party, Zahra Shahid Hussain, 60, was gunned down outside her home in the same area of Karachi, known as the NA-250. Police sources described the shooting as an attempt robbery gone wrong. But Mr.K

han and other party leaders immediately blamed the Muttahida Qaumi Movement as being involved – accusations that officials denied the motion. In a statement, he. Khan held directly Altaf Hussain, the leader of M. QM, Who lives in London, and he asked for interrogation or detention in Pakistan several charges, responsible for killing. Mr.K

han said. Hussain “had openly threatened P. TIworkers and leaders through public broadcasting. ””I also charge the British government responsible, as I was warned to act against Altaf Hussain after their open threats to kill P. TIworkpeople. Unfortunately, the British government did nothing to stop their calls to violence and murder, “Mr.K

han said in a statement. In a video message broadcast on Sunday, Mr.Khan insists his allegations against Mr.Hussain. “We can not let the sacrifice of Zahra Hussain go in vain,” he said. Before the election, Mr.K

han, mainly to boost the enthusiasm of young voters support, has repeatedly claimed that he would easily win a majority. But these expectations were in a strong performance choice of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his party, the independent legislator has recruited enough, dashed to form a parliamentary majority. Since then, Mr.Khan’s party staged a protest in Lahore against Mr. Sharif’s party in Karachi Muttahida Qaumi Movement against movement. On Sunday, Mr.K

han called on all political parties in Karachi to join forces on Monday to rally against movement. Mr.Hussein has responded, his political rival, announcing counterdemonstrations in all parts of the city. The change is another example of how violence and politics remain closely intertwined in Karachi, a sprawling port metropolis long been riven by political turf wars that left staggering number of bodies. On Saturday, killing had a direct effect on voter turnout, despite the army troops in the polling stations, officials said.

There were about 86,316 voters to vote in the district, and participation is usually quite high not. But as the election came to an end at 5 p. m, Election officials said that perhaps 10 percent of registered voters had sent a vote – a stark contrast with the participation mark of 60 percent across the country on election day. Politicians and experts praised MS. Hussein’s dedication and courage.

“He is a very hardworking, eloquent, progressive woman,” said Shumaisa Rehman, a Pakistan TV political talk show host. Ms.Rehman said he spoke with one of Ms. The two daughters of Hussain after his death, but the family would not speak publicly about it.
